How to choose your flooring

Choosing a floor can easily become overwhelming. There are so many wonderful options to choose from, for every area of the home. Here we are going to explore some of those options, to help you come to the perfect decision for all of your flooring project needs.

Bedrooms

Our bedrooms are our sanctuaries, a refuge from the higher traffic areas of the rest of the home. Solid wood or engineered wood is always a popular option with the bedroom, as each plank is unique, making an excellent choice for creating a luxurious and beautiful ambience in your bedroom.

Living Rooms

We place a lot of demands on our living rooms. They can be multi-use spaces, from cozy relaxation to home offices. A busier living room may require a more practical choice such as laminate or vinyl, while a living room that will be as peaceful as the bedroom could greatly benefit from the beauty of solid wood.

Kitchens

Our kitchens are often the liveliest room of our homes, whirlwinds of spillages, creativity, and general chaos. It is essential to choose a type of floor that meets the demands of a busy kitchen, much more than a bedroom or living room would need. For water resistance and impressive authenticity that is easy to care for, laminates or vinyls are always a great option.

Bathrooms

Choosing a flooring for the bathroom is a big decision. Our bathrooms are one moment the scenes of spa like relaxation, and the next a chaos of soap and water. We must take care in choosing materials for this room, considering humidity and possibilities of warping. The most common choices of materials will be luxury vinyl or sheet vinyl, being 100% waterproof.

Which type of floor you choose will determine what kind of process is involved in its installation. At San Diego Flooring Services we work with you to find the most practical and beautiful solution for your home, one step at a time.

Wood & Engineered hardwood Flooring

A classic hardwood floor will not be matched for the natural beauty and unique character it brings to any home. Real wood floors are available in solid wood or engineered hardwood, and come in vast arrays of styles and finishes such as beautiful rustic, aged oak, to more contemporary minimalist looks.

Engineered wood flooring is made of either a multi-ply or three-ply construction which also provides added protection against shrinking or warping.

When you seek that extra level of sophistication in a flooring project for your home, look no further than the inimitable, natural beauty of solid wood or engineered hardwood.

Types of Hardwood

There are different types of solid wood and engineered wood floors, such as click system floors that “float” on top of the subfloor, or traditional tongue and groove systems.

Best For

Solid and Engineered hardwood can be used for living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, bedrooms and more. Not recommended for installation in high moisture zones.

Maintenance

For daily activity, a microfiber cloth or dry mop will suffice, and a vacuum works great for hidden dirt or dust. There is a wide range of oils and cleaning products for the care of your floor.

Laminate Flooring

A highly versatile option, a laminate floor can offer the look of wood or stone with ease of care and a tough, resistant nature, perfect for even the busiest of rooms in the house.

To best decide on which type of laminate flooring to have installed, first consider the room in which you would like it. There are varying levels of thickness to choose from, depending on whether it will be for a busy area where it will require a thicker surface, or a bedroom which may need less thickness.

For the most active rooms like kitchens and hallways, laminate floors stand up excellently to the challenge. A translucent clear finish provides solid protection over the printed decor layer, a high definition digital reproduction of wood or stone.

Types of laminates

From Smooth laminate, to Embossed or Handscraped, laminate flooring comes in a vast variety of styles and colors, from wood and stone prints, to rustic oak or modern greys and whites.

Best For

Laminate floors can be installed in most areas of the home including dining and living rooms, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms. They are even safe to be installed over underfloor heating.

Maintenance

One advantage of laminate floors is that they are so easy to look after, with a smooth coated, durable finish, a good vacuuming or damp mopping will be enough to keep them looking great.

Vinyl Flooring

There are different types of vinyl flooring available to meet your flooring installation project needs. All share the same 100% waterproof qualities that can ensure the busiest of your spaces are fully protected, and all are available in a range of styles such as wooden plank, stone tile or patterned designs.

With a scratch resistant top layer providing all the texture and protection you need for even the most damage prone areas of your home, choosing vinyl flooring is choosing a stable durable material that will withstand all the demands you make on it, without the worrying for dings and dents.

Types of Vinyl

There is rigid core plank and luxury vinyl plank to choose from, as well as the equally durable yet more flexible, sheet vinyl flooring that can be loose layed or glued down.

Best For

Vinyl is great for bathrooms or kitchens, due it´s water resistance. Sheet vinyl can be considered a great option for busy spaces such as offices or playrooms, for it´s durability.

Maintenance

Regular sweeping, dusting or mopping is all it takes to keep your vinyl floor looking amazing for a long long time. For more serious stains or spots, there are specific cleaning products available.

Hardwood Flooring Frequently Asked Questions

Hardwood and Engineered hardwood are the most costly choices for your flooring, but are much sought-after for the beauty and ambience they provide for your space. The two are approximately the same cost to install.

The actual time it may take will vary, according to the requirements of your project. Take into account the sizes of the spaces, and the types of installation methods as well.

Ideally, a solid hardwood floor should be installed on the ground level of your home or above. It is susceptible to damage from humidity, and is therefore not recommended for lower levels or basements.

There are guidelines from the manufacturers that include care and maintenance requirements.

Absolutely! These strips serve to fill gaps and create transitions from the floor to the wall and from rooms to rooms, making them an essential part of any hardwood flooring project.

In many cases yes. Underlayment is there to protect your new floor from moisture, and even provides an acoustic barrier, making it a very important part of your hardwood flooring project. At San Diego Flooring Services, our professional team will help you choose the right kind of underlayment for your floor.

Prior to our team´s arrival, we suggest that you remove all furniture and objects from the space, so we are ready to begin when we arrive.

For any larger items such as a piano or pool table, we recommend that you contact a specialized moving service beforehand.

Sure! Hardwood is lumber, and can be repurposed in many ways.

When it comes to moisture resistance, an ideal choice would be engineered hardwood, especially for places like condos with cement subfloors.

For resurfacing, hardwood is the way to go as it can be resurfaced repeatedly. Engineered hardwood, depending on it´s thickness, cannot be resurfaced multiple times.

Of course! For an additional cost, we can remove your old hardwood floor. This process is more labor intensive than laminate floor removal, for example, and therefore will cost more.

Laminate Flooring Frequently Asked Questions

An important step of any flooring project  is the trim and molding, creating transitions from floor to wall, and laminate floors are no exception.

Due to it´s versatility, laminate flooring may be installed in many areas of your home including bedrooms, dining rooms, basements and living rooms. It´s also a great option for bathrooms and kitchens, having a durable top layer that is moisture resistant.

Yes it can. Provided that there are no moisture issues and the floor is level and clean, laminate flooring can be used over exisiting flooring such as vinyl, tile, and hardwood.

However, it cannot be used to cover existing floating floors or carpets.

This depends on the type of subfloor and the type of laminate chosen as some flooring comes included with underlayment pre-adhered to the product.

Underlayment provides an acoustic dampener as well, reducing noise while walking on floors and some types are used for sealing out moisture to resist mold and mildew.

Prior to our team´s arrival, we suggest that you remove all furniture and objects from the space, so we are ready to begin when we arrive.
For any larger items such as a piano or pool table, we recommend that you contact a specialized moving service beforehand.

Absolutely! For an additional charge, we can remove the old laminate flooring prior to installing the new one. Prices vary with different types of flooring, though laminate flooring requires less labour and therefore the additional cost will be less than other types of floors.

This often varies by product, though having a properly leveled subfloor prevents gaps between the boards, and any possible damage to the locking system.

Although laminate and vinyl flooring may be similar in appearance and installation, the two have different layers. Laminate has a core of wood byproducts with a top surface of hard plastic, making it thicker, while vinyl is completely synthetic with a base of fiberglass coated in PVC vinyl.

Vinyl is therefore better suited to areas of higher moisture, for it´s resistance to humidity, while laminate is often chosen for it´s stylish and aesthetic appeal.

Most laminate brands are water resistant, with edges treated with wax to reduce water damage, though no type of laminate flooring is 100% water proof.

There are guidelines from the manufacturers that include care and maintenance requirements.

Always clean your floor with products specifically made for laminate materials, to avoid warping and delamination.

Vinyl Flooring Frequently Asked Questions

Not only are vinyl planks a stylish and affordable alternative to hardwood flooring, they are water resistant and easy to clean and maintain, making them ideal for all areas of the home including kitchens and bathrooms.

Vinyl flooring can be installed over exisiting subfloors, depending on the type of subfloor and the type of vinyl chosen. Some vinyls come with an underlayment already attached, which helps with noise reduction as well as heat retention on colder weather.

Prior to our team´s arrival, we suggest that you remove all furniture and objects from the space, so we are ready to begin when we arrive. For any larger items such as a piano or pool table, we recommend that you contact a specialized moving service beforehand.

Absolutely! For an additional charge, we can remove the old vinyl flooring prior to installing the new one. Prices vary with different types of flooring, though removing vinyl flooring is less labour intensive and therefore will be less costly than removing a hardwood floor, for example.

Depending on the size of the space and the amount of floor preparation required, normally a vinyl floor can be installed in 1 to 2 days. There are some types of vinyl flooring that require a few days to acclimatise to the temperature and humidity of your home after installation, to prevent issues caused by expansion and contraction.

It is recommended to wait at least 24 hours after installing vinyl flooring, as it will need a little time to settle properly before being walked on.

Vinyl flooring is one of the most durable and waterproof materials, making it very easy to clean and maintain. Vacuuming, mopping and scrubbing out difficult stains are all possible, as well as any sweeping or washing with soap and water.

Vinyl flooring is really ideal for any room of your house, including zones of high moisture such as bathrooms and kitchens, where laminate flooring is more suited to less humid areas like bedrooms or living rooms.
